Staying Connected

Building community isn’t just for election season. It’s about showing up and supporting the causes we believe in. For the past two years, I’ve committed to listening to our community and bringing solutions to the table.

From joining my friends for the first Shiloh Community Association Gala, breaking ground on the improved Enka Candler Sports Park, or the South Buncombe Ice Cream Gathering, I’m committed to connecting with every part of our community and focused on improving life for everyone in our community.

In just a year, we’ve accomplished so much by simply listening to the people. Here are just a few of the initiatives I’ve been proud to support:

  • Continued investment in Buncombe’s Affordable Parking Program for our neighbors working downtown

  • Supporting Buncombe County Sherriff’s Office’s initiative to patrol downtown Asheville

  • Improved access to healthcare services for our marginalized populations

  • Investing in early childhood education to give our kids the head start they deserve

  • Pushing forward on housing initiatives to support our workers and public servants with truly affordable housing

  • Life-saving responses to help our community fight back against substance use and addiction

We reached these goals because our community made their voices heard at the polls and supported leaders who were ready to put our community first. I’m honored to serve as your county commissioner and I’m more energized than ever to see our work reach the next level.

Our community made this happen by supporting Democrats up and down the ballot. As we creep toward another election year in 2024, it’s more important than ever that we keep up our momentum and support candidates that are committed to our values and goals. I’m all in for the people of Buncombe, are you with me?

Putting Buncombe First

Martin speaking to volunteers before going to Bent Creek to meet with neighbors in District 2

This weekend, we teamed up with Team Jasmine, Sheriff Miller, Commissioners Parker Sloan and Amanda Edwards, Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger, and an amazing group of volunteers to get our message out: we’re fighting for an inclusive, stronger Buncombe together.

When we’re out knocking doors, it’s not just about sharing our vision for Buncombe, it’s about showing our neighbors that we hear them. We’re having great conversations with neighbors in the Hominies and Bent Creek and sitting down with our friends in Shiloh and making sure that EVERY part of our community is represented,.

Martin before Bent Creek canvass; preparing to meet neighbors in Buncombe

We’re spending every day between now and Election Day connecting with our neighbors, discussing policy, and focusing on the future of Buncombe.

We WANT your voice to be heard. We’ll be making calls, showing up to the polls and working to make sure our neighbors know they will have a strong, engaged voice on County Commission!

Our County Deserves Transparent Leaders

Active, engaged, transparent. Martin speaks to friends and neighbors at the Shiloh Community Center

“Our county deserves leaders who are engaging with their neighbors, show up, and share what they believe in.”

People deserve to know what their representatives believe; plain and simple.

From the Asheville Area Arts Council to CIBO, I’ve attended every County Commission forum because I know what transparency really means: answering the tough questions and focusing on solving problems.

With early voting in full swing, I want voters to have the information they need as I work to earn your vote:

Citizen Times - Questionnaire Responses

Mountain Xpress Questionnaire

“CAN” Community Forum 9/8/22

Asheville Area Arts Council Forum 9/22/22

CIBO Forum 9/12/22

JustEconomics/RJC/AB Food Policy Council Forum 10/20/22

From now through November 5 (and again on November 8th), we’ll be out meeting folks at the polls in our district, from the Friendship Center (Shiloh) to the Enka-Candler Library. I’m here for all of Buncombe and I know that together, we can give District 2 and Buncombe County the engaged, transparent Commission it deserves.

Endorsement Alert: S.M.A.R.T.

Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation (SMART) Union endorses Martin Moore’s candidacy for County Commission.

Sheet Metal, Air, Rail & Transportation (SMART) Union endorses Martin’s candidacy for County Commission.

SMART labor union sheet metal air rail transportation railway

I am proud to announce a particularly relevant and important endorsement: the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, & Transportation (SMART) Union.

Everyday, our railroad workers are assuring that thousands of freight trains are able to successfully haul goods that are critical to the health of our economy. Many of these skilled laborers are also responsible for transporting us safely to whatever business or personal trip that leads us to hop a train and take the well deserved respite on a peaceful ride.

Despite this, our railroad workers are on the verge of a nationwide strike in response to extremely difficult work conditions, including long shifts, many nights away from home/their families, and the need to be on-call, all while being expected to get to work in two hours or less for weeks at a time.

Most of us are at least somewhat versed in the important role the railroad system played in our nation’s history. Over the years, Western North Carolina workers have sacrificed their bodies, time with loved ones, and health while providing a much needed service that benefits every consumer in America.

We should not be demanding that these workers put themselves, their passengers, or their cargo in danger. Period.

Proud to support our workers and SMART in their efforts to advocate for their teams to remain safe and enjoy the hard-earned, reasonable work conditions they deserve.

To learn more, here is a link to an article about the potential strike.

Going to Work for Buncombe County

Martin speaks at Coalition of Asheville Neighborhoods candidate forum

“This race is about the people of Buncombe County. It’s time we listen to our neighbors and give ALL of District 2 a voice.”

This summer was about connection, change, and commitment. We’ve been knocking doors and meeting neighbors all across Buncombe County, from the Candler to Shiloh, and one thing is clear: my neighbors are ready for change.

My team and I have been out in full force, chatting with voters about how we can fight for our working families and building bridges to show folks that I am focused on what matters most to YOU: a safer community, better infrastructure, and quality schools.

On Thursday, I spoke at the Coalition of Asheville Neighbors Forum, discussing affordability and the cost of living in Buncombe, bringing higher paying jobs to Western North Carolina, and preserving our mountains and green spaces. While my opponent focused on fear tactics and platitudes, I offered plans for how we can support our working families and our retired communities while combating skyrocketing property taxes.

On Friday, I attended the Council on Independent Business Owners County Commissioners forum and discussed the realities of Buncombe County and how we put politics aside, find common ground, and support our community. The Citizen Times wrote a piece on the forum, you can check it out here.

This race is about community and real solutions, not excuses. As your County Commissioner, I’ll assure that our community has an effective, strong voice representing southwest Buncombe.

A Summer of Community, Connection, and Change

A day of action, a day of connecting with neighbors

District 2 is ready for experienced, engaged leadership

These summer months have not been about fundraising or stoking the flames of partisan politics, but connecting with our community and discussing real policy for improving quality of life for Buncombe County.

I’m knocking doors and meeting neighbors because our elected officials can only be a voice for the community if they’re engaged and listening. The status quo isn’t enough anymore.

You spoke, and we listened. District 2 and NC-11 are ready for change!

I’m focused on the local issues because District 2 deserves experienced, active leadership. Attracting better paying jobs, building a safer community, protecting our lands, and standing up for our students and teachers cannot wait; we need action NOW.

I’m ready to stand up and fight for Buncombe County, but I can’t do it alone. Are you with me?

Martin Moore Announces Candidacy for Buncombe County Commission

District 2 resident and Democrat Martin Moore has filed his notice of candidacy for Buncombe County Commission on March 3, 2022.

District 2 resident and Democrat Martin Moore has filed his notice of candidacy for Buncombe County Commission on March 3, 2022.

Martin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning a degree in both Political Science and Philosophy. Taking an interest in how to improve local government while focusing on public service, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina School of Law. While pursuing a legal education, public service remained a priority. He served in several leadership capacities, including Managing Editor of the First Amendment Law Review, Case Manager for the Innocence Project, and dedicated dozens of hours to helping North Carolina residents through the UNC Civil Legal Assistance Clinic. Through his education and pro bono efforts, Martin gained a deeper understanding of the problems North Carolinians face and gained the legal knowledge necessary to help individuals and improve systems.

Martin began his career as an attorney in Asheville, working with juveniles and fighting for the underserved. His advocacy extends beyond the court room, advocating for education equity with OpenDoors of Asheville, serving as Chair of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, and co-chair of the board of directors for the Campaign for Southern Equality. His experience as attorney has helped him to build the necessary relationships and gain invaluable experience understanding and drafting the policies needed to effect long-term, sustainable change.

“Working in public service and private practice, I have witnessed the damaging effects substance use and crime can have on our families and neighbors. There are a great number of positive programs and plans in the works, but I believe we can be more proactive in addressing the underlying issues. I have the experience, drive, and ability to work with our county officials and community partners to move us forward and implement some true change for our community.”

Martin believes that the County Commission is uniquely positioned to effect positive change by incorporating community feedback and focusing on local problems, including affordable housing and responsible growth.

“Public service has given me a chance to see and hear firsthand the issues that our community cares about. Affordable housing, safe communities, living wages, and long-term solutions for our neighbors battling addiction; these aren’t insurmountable problems. I’m ready to tackle these challenges with our community and will be a fierce advocate to help our family and friends here in Buncombe.
