- Prioritize serious offenses that impact community safety.
- Work collaboratively with law enforcement and community partners to focus on crime prevention and proactive measures to address root causes of crime
- Reform practices that criminalize poverty, mental illness, or substance use.
- Support domestic violence survivors with commonsense reforms that build trust in local systems.
- Lead a District Attorney’s Office built on strong core values: fairness, transparency, and justice.
- Engage directly with residents, faith leaders, and grassroots organizations to assure just outcomes and build trust.
- Build meaningful relationships with local law enforcement leaders.
- Support Bail Reform initiatives and other practices that help combat the criminalization of poverty while assuring community safety.
- Collaborate with state experts and the Attorney General’s Office to review potential wrongful convictions and procedural errors.
- Work with Justice Services and our Buncombe County Commissioners to implement data transparency and reduce racial bias in charging, plea offers, and sentencing.
- Promote policies that ensure equal treatment for all, regardless of race, income, or identity.
- Protect our vulnerable communities by establishing trust and building meaningful relationships.
- Envision success as the reduction of re-offending.
- Center the needs of victims, ensuring they are heard, protected, and supported throughout the process.
- Expand resources for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other trauma.
- Continue partnerships with the Family Justice Center and local non-profits that support survivors.
- Work with our District Court Judges to implement diversion and treatment pathways for low-level, non-violent offenders, especially for youth and those experiencing mental illness or committing crimes of poverty.
- Support access to diversion programs & treatment courts, restorative justice models, and re-entry support.
- Ensure people aren’t denied the opportunity for diversion because of prohibitive court costs.
- Proactively pursue license restoration efforts and expunction efforts where appropriate for non-violent, non-recidivists, and juveniles.
