Martin on the Issues

This office is about more than bringing charges. It’s about expanding the definition of community safety by protecting victims, preventing harm, and ensuring the law works for everyone. I am ready to serve—and to build a safer, fairer Buncombe County for all.

  • Prioritize serious offenses that impact community safety.
  • Work collaboratively with law enforcement and community partners to focus on crime prevention and proactive measures to address root causes of crime
  • Reform practices that criminalize poverty, mental illness, or substance use.
  • Support domestic violence survivors with commonsense reforms that build trust in local systems.

  • Lead a District Attorney’s Office built on strong core values: fairness, transparency, and justice.
  • Engage directly with residents, faith leaders, and grassroots organizations to assure just outcomes and build trust.
  • Build meaningful relationships with local law enforcement leaders.
  • Support Bail Reform initiatives and other practices that help combat the criminalization of poverty while assuring community safety.
  • Collaborate with state experts and the Attorney General’s Office to review potential wrongful convictions and procedural errors.

  • Work with Justice Services and our Buncombe County Commissioners to implement data transparency and reduce racial bias in charging, plea offers, and sentencing.
  • Promote policies that ensure equal treatment for all, regardless of race, income, or identity.
  • Protect our vulnerable communities by establishing trust and building meaningful relationships.
  • Envision success as the reduction of re-offending.

  • Center the needs of victims, ensuring they are heard, protected, and supported throughout the process.
  • Expand resources for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other trauma.
  • Continue partnerships with the Family Justice Center and local non-profits that support survivors.

  • Work with our District Court Judges to implement diversion and treatment pathways for low-level, non-violent offenders, especially for youth and those experiencing mental illness or committing crimes of poverty.
  • Support access to diversion programs & treatment courts, restorative justice models, and re-entry support.
  • Ensure people aren’t denied the opportunity for diversion because of prohibitive court costs.
  • Proactively pursue license restoration efforts and expunction efforts where appropriate for non-violent, non-recidivists, and juveniles.
